Description
Commissioned by the ‘Iolani School Big Band in Honolulu, The Owl King features a tenor solo that can also be given to trumpet. Based on an ancient Hawaiian myth, this chart features in several places waves of repetitive pitches that introduce players to simple textural improvisation, in time, as a group on top of the rhythm section. In other places, the melody is more traditional, yet influenced by Radiohead-like harmony.
