Description

As recorded by Mats Holmquist, Randy Brecker, Dick Oatts and Latvian Radio Big Band on the album "Big Band Minimalism" (Summit/MAMA Records 2017).
As the title implies Mats Holmquist has probably taken minimalist techniques as far as it is possible in this piece. Based on the idea of Steve Reich's minimalist masterpiece Violin Phase where two violins play at a sligtly different tempo and glides further and further apart, Holmquist uses the trombone section to do this at the beginning of the piece, and later also in all the horn sections. The "theme" is presented in canon by two altos on high harmonics doubled with trumpet 1 & 2 with different mutes. The piece continues to develop for long and swithes keys/modes a number of times. Extensive solos for tenor 1 and guitar. An epic piece with the sound of modern classical and minimalist music a' la Steve Reich.
”Mats Holmquist is one of the jazz world’s finest composers and arrangers."
