Craig Cammell
Craig Cammell is a composer, saxophonist, and bass clarinetist known for his quirky compositional sensibilities and energetic, expressive playing style. An active presence in the Los Angeles music scene since 2010, he has continually created his own artistic outlets and projects following the completion of his Bachelor of Music in Performance from California State University, Northridge.
Drawing from a wide range of influences — including Charlie Hunter, John Ellis, Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Will Vinson, Thad Jones, and Joe Henderson — Craig blends elements of jazz, funk, and contemporary music into a distinctive compositional voice.
His body of work includes over 30 original big band compositions, showcasing a strong command of large-ensemble writing through inventive melodies, rich harmonies, and dynamic rhythmic structures. As the leader of the Craig Cammell Large Band, a 17-piece ensemble, he brings these works to life in high-energy performances throughout Southern California.
In addition to his large ensemble work, Craig leads a quartet dedicated to his original music, which released its debut album in November 2022. The project highlights his approach to composition and improvisation across a more intimate setting.
Throughout his career, Craig has collaborated with a wide range of notable musicians, including Chris Wabich, Will Brahm, Aaron Janik, Joey Sellers, Collin Cook, and Jerry Pinter. His growing catalog of original music and consistent presence on the scene have established him as a versatile and forward-thinking artist.
