Description

Alma Caribeña was commissioned by the Jazz Education Network and was premiered by the Navy Commodores at the 2004 JEN conference. A fun, soca-based Latin chart, vaguely reminiscent of Kenny Garretts’s “Calypso Chant,” it’s a medium level (grade 3-4) composition with an accessible two-chord solo section that can be opened up as needed. Vibraphone and congas are optional but highly desirable.

Instrumentation

Big Band (5/4/4/4)

Soca means the '(So)ul of (Ca)lypso', and represents a fusion of African and Caribbean Kaiso and Calypso and South Asian rhythms. The style comes from Trinidad and was created around the 70s.
