Commissioned by Eric Schmitz, for the University of Rochester (NY) Jazz Ensemble, Arenas is an exciting, hard-driving, Afro-Cuban chart cast in a modal harmonic framework. Contrapuntal textures abound, including a bonafide fugue. In addition to an unaccompanied (free) piano solo, blowing space is allocated to tenor and alto saxophones. Recorded by the University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One on Sea Breeze Vista on 'Memento.'
