Description
Set in a groovy swing style that subtly hints at a 12/8 feel, "Reflection" is a trombone feature showcasing intricate woodwind and muted brass textures that create vivid, colorful textures. Throughout the piece, a three-note motif developed and combined with a pedal point that builds and releases into 4/4 walking bass, mixed with bursts of double-time swing. There are ample solo opportunities for the featured trombone (or an optional saxophone or trumpet) and piano. An a cappella ensemble passage starts thin, gradually builds into rich, dense harmonies punctuated by drum fills. A brief shout chorus is followed by a soprano sax solo, which closes out the piece. The blend of rich textures, deep swing, and sudden double-time shifts gives "Reflection" its vibrant character, creating an engaging and sophisticated sound making it an ideal piece for advanced ensembles.
